Games Design

Course overview

Explore and develop your understanding of playing, designing and building games. You will learn what games are, what makes them fun and how to build them using Adobe® Flash® Professional CC and Adobe Brackets. Each week the course will build upon a specific element of games design and introduce a small amount of coding. We will meet professionals from the Games Design industry and find out more about their route into the industry and how they work now.

Learning outcomes

In this course you will meet games industry experts, learn about the games industry and cover the key elements of Games Design.

Participants will gain an introductory working knowledge of key Adobe tools used in games production.

We will also be introducing Adobe Brackets in order to publish the games we make to your own devices. Brackets is a new open source code editor for HTML, CSS and JavaScript built with HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

Once you’ve completed the Adobe Generation Games Design course, you will be able to:

  • Create a playable screen based computer game
  • Critique and analyse games with a specialist vocabulary
  • Understand the key concepts of Games Design theory and production
  • Devise, plan and create your own computer game.

Syllabus

During the five-week course you’ll cover the following key concepts:

  • What is a game? What are serious games? What are casual games? What game are we creating?
  • Brainstorming, The Design Process, Storyboarding and Paper Prototyping Character/World Building, Genre, Digital Prototyping
  • Rules/Boundaries, Objectives/Procedures, Conflict/Challenge
  • User interface and Game presentation

Important Notice

A trial or fully licensed membership to Adobe Creative Cloud will be needed to partake in this course. If you currently don’t have a membership it is recommended that you consider downloading a 30-day free trial of the products needed for the course. It is advised that the 30-day free trial is downloaded as close to the course start date as possible.

Trial versions can be converted to complete or single-app membership via the Adobe Creative Cloud website. After you purchase membership, the desktop product trial will automatically convert into the licensed version, so you can carry on working.
